Dr Craig Brown - Moderator

Dr Craig Brown is a general dental practitioner and has been running his own two-dentist practice in Manly, Sydney, since 1988. He has held an appointment as Adjunct Lecturer in the School of Dentistry and Health Sciences at Charles Sturt University and was admitted as a Fellow of both the Academy of Dentistry International and the Pierre Fauchard Academy in 2015 and the International College of Dentists in 2021.  Craig worked for ADA NSW Advisory Services on a part-time basis for over 10 years, firstly as a Peer Advisor and subsequently in a consultancy capacity.

Dr Jilen Patel - Specialist Paediatric Dentist

Dr Jilen Patel is a specialist paediatric dentist, senior lecturer at the UWA Dental School, consultant at Perth Children’s Hospital and principal at Castlegate Family Dental Care. Dr. Patel received both the Royal Australasian College emerging lecturer award and the ADA/Pierre Fauchard Academy’s lecturer award for his research and discussion on the paradigm shifts in modern cariology, and previously received the GC minimal intervention award for research on the remineralisation potential of topical fluorides. He is currently exploring the efficacy of novel non-fluoridated modalities such as bioglass and self-assembling peptides, in addition to leading an Australian-first clinical trial investigating the use of Silver Diamine Fluoride in caries management. Dr. Patel is the past chairman and a proud member of the Kimberley Dental Team a non-for-profit volunteer organization that has been providing dental care to remote Aboriginal communities for the past 15 years. His PhD created an evidence-based framework for volunteer dental organisations and evaluated the impact of this work in remote communities. Jilen was recently awarded the ADA outstanding young dentist award for his contributions to the profession.

Synopsis

The use of Silver Diamine Fluoride (SDF) in caries management has gained significant interest since the advent of COVID-19 and the need for non-aerosol generating procedures. This webinar will delve into the mechanisms of action of SDF, exploring its antibacterial and remineralising effects. We will discuss the indications and contraindications of its use, providing guidance for clinical decision-making. Additionally, the webinar will address frequently asked clinical questions around SDF, including its application techniques, potential side effects, and its role in caries management.
