Synopsis

Drugs are an intrinsic part of everyday dental practice. This includes the drugs patients are already on, the drugs they have reacted to in the past,  the drugs to use during the procedure, and of course the drugs the dentists may want to prescribe.  This new text, Handbook of Dental Therapeutics is a comprehensive but succinct guide to the practical use of drugs in everyday dentistry. This webinar will present a summary of the various aspects of this book. Examples include appropriate use of the common drugs dentists prescribe, prescribing for the very old and very young, prescribing legalities and competencies, drugs associated with bleeding risk and medication-related osteonecrosis of the jaw.:

Learning outcomes:

  • Appreciate that the Handbook of Dental Therapeutic (HDT) is a companion text to Therapeutic Guidelines – Oral and Dental. The two are best used together.

  • Understand that the HDT provides introductory chapters on pharmacology, toxicology, and appropriate prescribing including relevant legislation, medication error prevention and explanations of off-label drug use.
  • Appreciate the scope of chapters covering drugs commonly used in dentistry from antimicrobials (including antibiotic prophylaxis), analgesics, anti-inflammatories, anxiolytics, topical medication and local anaesthetics.
  • Know that this book provides whole chapters on safe prescribing for children, the elderly, those who are pregnant or breastfeeding.

  • Learn that special topics are addressed such as oral adverse drug reactions, medication-related osteonecrosis of the jaw and drugs associated with increasing bleeding risk
