Dr Peter Norton - ADA Interact Host

Peter graduated from the University of Adelaide in 2004. He works in private practice in rural and metropolitan New South Wales, with particular interest in preventive and restorative dentistry. Peter is a regular host, interviewer and moderator for digital CPD events, and is a Clinical Media Advisor and Committee Consultant to the Australian Dental Association.

A/Prof. Ramesh Balasubramaniam OAM

Ramesh Balasubramaniam graduated with a Bachelor of Dental Science from the University of Western Australia in 2000 and subsequently practiced general dentistry. In 2006, he completed a three-year training programme, which included a fellowship and a certificate in Orofacial Pain at the University of Kentucky. Whilst at the University of Kentucky, he also completed a Master of Science degree in Orofacial Pain. He is a Diplomate of the American Board of Orofacial Pain. Ramesh also underwent training in the field of Dental Sleep Medicine at the University of Kentucky.

In 2008, Ramesh completed specialist training in Oral Medicine as well as a fellowship in Interdisciplinary Geriatrics at the University of Pennsylvania . He was Chief Resident at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, Department of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery, Division of Oral Medicine. He was also awarded the Robert Shatnner Award for the most outstanding resident in Oral Medicine.

Prof. Peter Cistulli

Peter Cistulli is Professor of Sleep Medicine at the University of Sydney, and Director of the Sleep Investigation Unit in the Department of Respiratory and Sleep Medicine at Royal North Shore Hospital.  He is also a director of the Sleep and Breathing Specialist Centre at the North Shore Health Hub: http://www.sleepandbreathing.com.au  He is a consultant respiratory and sleep medicine physician with 30 years’ experience in clinical and laboratory aspects of Sleep Medicine, spanning both respiratory and non-respiratory sleep disorders. 

He leads a strongly interdisciplinary and integrated clinical research programme across Royal North Shore Hospital and the Charles Perkins Centre (University of Sydney) that spans the mechanisms of sleep-disordered breathing and novel treatment approaches. This has been achieved through the establishment of multiple successful collaborations in Australia and overseas. His research programme has been largely funded by the National Health and Medical Research Council of Australia, and he has received numerous national and international awards for his ground-breaking work.. 

He is a former President of the Australian Sleep Association and a former board director of the Sleep Health Foundation, whose mission is to raise community awareness of the negative impact of untreated sleep disorders and poor sleep behaviours on health, safety, productivity and quality of lif

Synopsis

Dental sleep medicine is the field of dentistry that focuses on dental management of sleep disorders such snoring, obstructive sleep apnoea, and sleep bruxism primarily with oral appliance therapy among other treatment modalities. Dentists are often called upon to collaborate with medical practitioners to facilitate treatment for sleep disorders to improve patients’ sleep quality, and overall health and well-being.
